Chimney Inspections
Why Annual Chimney Inspections Matter, Even for Occasional Use
The Myth: “I only use my fireplace during the holidays, so I don’t need an annual inspection.”
The Truth: Both the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) strongly recommend annual chimney inspections, regardless of usage frequency.
Understanding the Three Levels of Chimney Inspections
The NFPA has standardized three levels of chimney inspections:
- Level One Inspection: This is a basic inspection that involves checking readily accessible parts of the chimney during an annual maintenance cleaning. It’s designed to remove creosote buildup and other debris. However, if you’ve experienced significant changes like appliance replacements or severe weather events, a Level One inspection isn’t sufficient.
- Level Two Inspection: This more in-depth inspection is the most common. It’s recommended if you’ve had equipment malfunctions, chimney fires, or new appliance installations. It also includes checking areas that aren’t visible during a Level One inspection, such as the flue system and smoke chamber.
- Level Three Inspection: This is the most invasive level of inspection and is typically only needed when serious issues are discovered during a Level One or Level Two inspection that require further investigation.
